How Often Should You Change Your Air Filter?

A simple maintenance task that can improve efficiency and indoor air quality.

The general rule

Most 1-inch filters should be replaced every 30-90 days. Thicker 4- to 5-inch media filters can last 6-12 months. The right interval depends on your home, not just the calendar.

Replace more often if you have…

Pets, allergies, a large household, or someone in the home who smokes. Running your system heavily during peak summer or winter also loads filters faster.

Why it matters

A clogged filter forces your blower to work harder, raises energy bills, and can lead to frozen coils or premature failure. A clean filter is the single cheapest way to protect your system and your indoor air quality.
