Heat Pump vs Furnace: Which Is Right For You?

Compare the pros and cons of two popular home heating solutions.

How they differ

A furnace creates heat by burning gas, oil, or using electric resistance. A heat pump moves existing heat from outside air into your home. It also reverses to cool in summer, doing both jobs with one system.

When a heat pump wins

In mild and moderate climates, heat pumps are extremely efficient and can dramatically lower energy costs because they move heat rather than generate it. They also provide year-round heating and cooling in a single unit.

When a furnace wins

In very cold climates, a gas furnace delivers strong, consistent heat at a lower operating cost during deep freezes. Many homes use a hybrid setup. A heat pump handles most of the year, with a furnace backup for the coldest days.
